Welcome, Spartan!

Welcome to the rugged patch of cyber-earth where modern-day Spartans band together in unity... solidarity... and hoodies... FOR SPARTA!

Let's face it. Not all of us can pull off the leather codpiece look, and even the most hardened Spartan needs a cozy hoodie once in a while.

Join the community with a Spartan hoodie of your own. Add your signature to the roster or follow these simple instructions & you'll be a modern-day Spartan before you can say "#&$!, it's a rampant rhinoceros"!

Feel free to scribble the name of your favorite Spartan in place of Dilios, if another of the 300 strikes your fancy. Or, if you wish, scribble your name or a slogan. And if you don't have a hoodie, you can still lend your support to the cause. Just be ready with the leather undies.

The concept behind Spartans Wear Hoodies is detailed here. (If this is your first visit, you'll probably want to read that.)

Spartans make a difference: We're more than just hoodies! Read how we're aiming to make a positive impact on the world here.

DONATION NEWS:

Dear Fellow Spartans,

Today is David "Dilios" Wenham's birthday, and what better day to make our long-awaited donation to The Wayside Chapel?

I have submitted our donation of $166 USD today, 9/21, via the internet. Google puts this at $194.652908 AUD (round up as you will).

This money represents funds raised through the sale of products and services such as our hoodies, pins, and e-mail addresses, Dollar Day donations, and personal donations (including one in honour of my birthday--thank you, you know who you are!). It is the total amount of proceeds (plus a few cents I added in to round up to the nearest dollar). In total we raised $277.50 USD ($325.40 appx AUD); the difference is the money extracted by CafePress for the price they charge for goods created and the fees extracted by PayPal.

If you appreciate the work of the birthday boy & genesis of this whole mad idea, David Wenham, why not drop by the Chapel's page and make a direct donation now?

Our roster stands at over 70 signatures strong. The MySpace branch of our "army" is currently numbered at 441 (we took a hit in numbers of almost 50 when MySpace removed all deleted accounts; people come and go there, we still receive daily "friend" requests). We have members all over the world--from many different US states to the Philippines, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Canada, England--even the real Sparta. What we have accomplished is a wonderful feat. We've built communities, celebrated a culture and history worthy of note, and raised funds and awareness for a very good cause.

I would like to personally thank each and every one of you who has contributed time, energy, and moral support to our work. In particular, there are outstanding individuals whose contributions are especially worthy of mention; you can find our thanks to these people on the "our thanks" area of the SWH web site.

From this point forward, we are encouraging direct donations to the Chapel, and are ending our fundraising efforts through products and services in favour of simplified direction of funds straight to the cause. I ask that you continue to keep the Chapel in mind and visit their web site often (http://www.thewaysidechapel.com). They are always up to interesting things and creating material that challenges us to think and feel, and to fight for social justice with the same tenacity the Spartans fought for their country.

One more rousing cry of HAROO! for all of you.

Notable Quotable:
An old man wandering around the Olympic Games looking for a seat was jeered at by the crowd until he reached the seats of the Spartans, whereupon every Spartan younger than him, and some that were older, stood up and offered him their seat. The crowd applauded and the old man turned to them with a sigh, saying "All Greeks know what is right, but only the Spartans do it."
